Describing Words

As well as learning the story of Little Red Riding Hood, we have been thinking a lot about  what we like about the story and the different characters in it. As part of this we have been looking again at adjectives, and how this special type of word can help to make stories more interesting to read.

We have learnt that adjectives are words that describe things and help paint a picture of things using words. To learn more about how they are used, we looked at some writing without any adjectives and then looked at it again with describing words added. We could see straight away just how the adjectives made it more interesting to read and that we could picture things in our head just with these describing words added. Matty explained to the class that adding adjectives made the writing really strong and helped to create super sentences. Mr Budge thought this was a great way to describe how they worked and agreed that if we added more than one adjective it might even make the description even stronger. So we tried this and we were right!

So, to begin to become expert adjective writers and describers, we looked at the two main characters from the story of Little Red Riding Hood and worked to think of the kinds of adjectives we could use to describe them to other people. So that we could paint a picture of these characters in their mind. We knew that we could describe what they look like, but also found out that we could  also describe what they acted like as well.

After we had finished we read out our descriptions to the class to see if they could tell which character we had described and if they could draw a picture just like our description. We found that this really worked and that if we used adjectives to describe things it could make our writing really powerful and interesting. We also swapped our work with friends to see if they could spot the adjectives we used after we finished and they could do this easily because our adjectives were so strong.
