Teddy Bears Picnic

This half term we will be reporters. The children will have responsibility for reporting what we have been doing at school. Here is Josh and Chloe's first news report!!!

First we walked out of school and we went to the sea front. Then we walked to the grass and had 15 minutes of play. After that we played in and out the dusty bluebells and watched the magic show. Then we had lunch. Next we had an hour play and some people went home, some people went back to school.

Shadow Puppet Day

What a fantastic day Year 1 had on Thursday 6th June. The whole year group was lucky enough to have Louise Godber from Inside Out Theatre come and share her expertise in puppet making. We learned about the different puppets we can make and learned how to make our own shadow puppets. We took inspiration from our Seaside theme and made a range of sea creatures. Our puppets had moving parts which we controlled with sticks. We worked on our puppets all morning, decorating them with cellophane, feathers and materials. Then in the afternoon we performed with our puppets to the rest of the year group to a range of different kinds of music. It was a fantastic experience. We will be focusing on reporting and recount writing this term and our puppet day definitely gave us lots to write about!!!!

Our Seaside Town

This term we start our new topic about 'Our Seaside Town'. We will be learning about sea creatures found locally and about the key features that make Ilfracombe a 'seaside town'. To start our topic we began by looking at some sea creatures found in our local rock-pools. We read the story of Home for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle and looked at images of real Hermit Crabs. We then tried our very best to draw line drawings of these creatures. We looked closely and added as much detail as we could. We took photo's of our crabs with our favourite shells.

How to make a Space Sandwich!!!

We invented new alien characters and settings for our Space Stories. Bradley wrote a fantastic story about a Space Party on Mars! We were soooo excited by his ideas that we decided to invent some special alien food for a mini Space Party of our own. We made alien biscuits and sandwiches. We made up names for our alien ingredients using adjectives such as slimey, slobbery bogeys,  spodgy alien ear wax, flobbery alien finger and thumbs, gooey, gungy googly eyes. MMmmmmmm! We really enjoyed trying out our inventions!

Rocket Building for Egbert the Eggstanaut

With Miss Pickervance we had to design and make a rocket to keep Egbert the EGGstranaut safe. We used what we found out from our paper rocket designs and our knowledge of the real world to think of ways to prevent him from cracking when he landed.
We had great fun thinking of ways to protect him. We filled our rockets with everything from feathers to scrunched up paper balls and even WATER!!!!
Ask your child to find out if Egbert survived?????????????????

Designing and making Rockets

We have been working with Miss Pickervance designing and making paper rockets. We tested our rockets to see which flew the best. We talked about why we thought all the rockets flew differently. We evaluated our designs and adapted them to make improvements.

Reading Buddies

We have been 'buddying' with a reception class for shared reading.
We have been sharing our reading skills with some children in Reception.
We paired up and read a book we selected ourselves. We were able to model sounding our and reading our keywords to younger children as well as talk about our favourite books and stories.
It was great fun working with different children and we are looking forward to doing it again soon!

Blasting off with Space Art!

Space Art

As part of our Space topic we have been enjoying some exciting art activities. We made a range of different papers using printing equipment, finger painting and wax resist. We used this paper later for our collage art work based on planets. We also had great fun 'doodling' our own imaginary alien characters. We made them as 'wacky' as we could adding lots of wiggly arms, legs and eyes. We used our favourite ones to write descriptions of in our Literacy sessions.
Then we used clay, lolli-pop sticks, feathers beads and TONNES of GLITTER!!!! to invent our own new imaginary alien planets as a new setting for our Space stories. These activities really helped to extend our descriptive vocabulary!
