Our trip to the park

On Monday we had a wonderful time at the park with the other year 1 children. We were really lucky that the rain stayed away!
First we had a brilliant time floating the boats we made in DT on the duck pond. Some of them floated really well, we talked about what made these float well and why some were sinking. We loved pulling them along on their strings around the pond!
Next we visited the herb garden, we explored the different smells and talked about what they reminded us of, We thought the mint leaves smelt like toothpaste! We also spotted an unusual shiny beetle that we thought looked like it was from space.
After our snack we went on a little treasure hunt to see what natural treasures we could find with a friend. We looked at the different shaped leaves and talked about how the park was different to the beach that we visited last week. Then we got to play int he park and played with the parachute which was brilliant :-).

Shadow Puppet Performance

In Year 1 we were really lucky to have a local artist Louise come to visit and share with us how to make shadow puppets. First she showed us all of the diferent kinds of puppets she has and then showed us how to a sea themed shadow puppet. We worked really hard to designa nd create our shadow puppets in the classroom. It was so much fun but tricky to make it have a moving part! This took lots of stickability and not giving up!
We got into small groups and made up a short story to perform using our puppets. This group worked particularly well together as a group to listen and co-operate. Well done Marc, Harriet, Zac, Noah and Tyler W! :-)
We each had a go at performing behind the screen with our shadow puppets! We learnt how to make the shadow bigger and smaller.

Our Lovely Seaside Town

This half term our learning topic is Our Seaside Town. We will be thinking about our local environment and the creatures that live there. We had a class discussion about the what we already knew about our seaside town and created a list. Using this list we then researched creatures that lives in rock pools and had a go at drawing pictures of them and the boats that we see in our harbour. We have made a lovely display using the art that we collaboratively created in pairs. We hope you like it :-).

What exploding fun!

Today we had a brilliant time making our very own volcano explosions!! We discussed what we already knew about volcanoes as a class and watched a video clip of one erupting. We made a class word bank of words to describe volcanoes. Then we predicted what would happen when we mixed vinegar and baking soda in a bottle. Lots of us used our kowledge about volcanoes erupting to guess it might explode, because we thought the vinegar might make it fizzy.
Wow! We couldn't believe how many bubbles it made. The bubbles pushed the vinegar out of the bottle and got Miss Coleman!! We thought the vinegar looked just like the lava erupting from
a  volcano!

1MC Newsflash... 1st Man on the Moon!

posted 23 May 2013, 08:26 by m coleman   [ updated 23 May 2013, 08:28 by jason@ilfracombe-inf.devon.sch.uk ]

This week we have been learning about important people in the history of space. We researched into the first moon landing and collected lots of information using the internet, video clips and books. In groups we made notes about the facts we had learnt and then worked as a team to choose facts to read out. Once we had rehearsed our news report as a group we used the microphones to record our braodcast! It was great hearing ourselves back and we were able to say what we needed to do differently next time.

We have been having a splashing time swimming :-)

We love that it is time to get in the pool again :-). We have been practising kicking our legs, swimming in our backs and some of us are perfecting our front crawl arm stroke!
Thank you to the parents that have volunteered to help (even in the rain!), you are brilliant :-).

Eggstranaut challenge!

posted 16 May 2013, 09:16 by m coleman   [ updated 16 May 2013, 09:19 by jason@ilfracombe-inf.devon.sch.uk ]

Our mission was to create a parachute to get the eggstranaut back home safely to Earth after his rocket crashed.
We chose the groups we worked in and talkked about the kind of parachute we would like to create. We worked together to draw a design of our parachute and then label the materials and fixings we would need. It was fantastic to see the children working as a team, listening to each other and using each other's strengths.
Then we used our designs to collect our materials and make our parachute.
We took it in turns to launch the parachutes with our eggstranauts to se if they landed safely without cracking. As a class we decided we need to launch them from the same place and in the same way for it to be a fair test.
