Numeracy is a tool for life. We recognise that it is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them for life.

We aim to provide the children with a mathematics curriculum that will produce individuals who are literate, creative, independent, inquisitive, enquiring and confident. We also aim to provide a fun, stimulating environment and a diverse range of resources so they can develop their mathematical skills to their full potential.

We endeavour at all times to set work that is challenging, motivating and encourages the pupils to talk about what they have been doing. We also stress the importance of strong mental calculation skills and in providing opportunities for children to apply and use Mathematics in real contexts.

Our main aims when teaching maths are that all children will:
  • Enjoy maths using a practical investigative approach
  • Study with developing confidence and a sense of achievement
  • Realise that their own ways of tackling mathematical problems are as valuable as traditional methods
  • Develop ways of working independently and in co-operation with others
  • Encouraging a reflective approach to living
  • Develop the ability to work investigatively within mathematics and in the wider curriculum
  • Appreciate pattern, relations, the creative aspect and aesthetic appeal of maths
